Corsicana - Nina Sue Burton Cook, known to all as Sue, went to the Lord on September 10, 2025 at the age of 91. She was born November 6, 1933, in Munday, Texas, to James H. and Inez Burton. She grew up in Abilene, Texas graduating from Abilene High School then attended Texas Tech University. She met the love of her life, Leland P. Cook, at the age of 11 in Abilene. They married in 1953 and built a family together, raising five sons.
Sue was a gifted artist and draftsperson. She worked for West Texas Utilities and later as a freelance illustrator and designer for Corsicana businesses, creating logos, medallions, and historic illustrations. Sue and Leland purchased Cranford Vending Company in Corsicana and renamed it Master Vend. In her later years she dedicated her time, energy, and passion to The Cook Center, Navarro College Foundation and especially the Dancing for our Stars Gala.
Her love of horses helped lead to the creation of Richland Ranch, where she and Leland bred and raced thoroughbreds, including Louisiana Derby winner Dixieland Heat. Sue was active in the Texas Thoroughbred Racing Association and a strong supporter of Texas racing.
Beyond her work and community service, Sue loved to read new books, stayed up to date on current events, and was an avid sports fan—especially devoted to Texas A&M football. She was truly one of a kind, feisty, unique, and cool. Sue was a great cook who rarely used a recipe. She loved movies, gardening, and working puzzles.
On a trip to Israel in 2011 Sue was baptized by Pastor Rick Lamb in the Jordan River; which was a profoundly meaningful experience for her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, husband Leland, son Rob, grandson Andrew, and great-grandson Aden. She is survived by sons Byron (Kay), Ken (Paula), Lance (Karen), and Brad; daughter-in-law Margo. Surviving grandchildren, Audrey (Russell) Reed, Ginne (Josh) Davis, Landon (Jordan) Cook, Kyle (Candace) Cook, Devin (Mike) Agonis, Logan (Mackenzie) Cook, Jack Summitt, Carlos (Caitlin) Cook, Lawton (Amanda) Cook, Katie (Hunter) Melton, Leland (Annabelle) Cook, Hayden B. Cook, Amber Cook and 32 great-grandchildren, extended family and special friend Lou Ann Star.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 6-8 p.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow Friday, September 19, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Northside Baptist Church in Corsicana, with a private burial. Donations may be made to Navarro College Foundation.
