His education was extended from Jackson Elementary to Jackson High School to Prairie View College to Bishop College to Boston University and ended at Gupton Jones School of Mortuary Science.

He was drafted into the United States Army for several years and was honorably discharged as 1st Lieutenant.

After returning home, he worked for a short time for Corsicana Independent School District and his family business (Peoples Undertaking Co.). Later he opened his own business, Scott Funeral Home, became the first black male councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem.

His religious choice was from Sixth Avenue Baptist Church as a youth until his health failed.

He leaves to cherish his memories a wife of 59 years (Mable Cook); daughter, Faith Holt; two granddaughters, Vernita Butler and Veronica Butler; one great granddaughter, Qualesha "Mandi" Thomas (Nathaniel); and one great-great-granddaughter, known in Corsicana as "Suga Sac" (Loriana Thomas) and one great-great-grandson, Bubba (Louis Thomas); numerous God-children including Trina Sanders McAllister, Loretta Carter Butler, Deborah Collins, Billy Jones, Chester Bradley, Allen Jordan and Vincent Jackson.

He always would boast proudly that he is the beginning of five generations and the fourths are all females.
