Melvin LeRoy Scruggs Obituary

Corsicana - Melvin LeRoy Scruggs, 91, of Tomball, Texas, passed away on February 21, 2026.

Melvin was born on January 8, 1935, in Kerens, Texas, to the late James Alva Scruggs and Letha Thompson Scruggs. After graduating from Kerens High School, he moved to Houston, where he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Lapetina Scruggs. They were united in marriage on November 9, 1956, and shared 69 wonderful years, building a life grounded in love, family, faith, and unwavering devotion to one another.

Melvin began his professional career in 1955 with Houston Lighting & Power, where he served as Supervisor of the Street Light Division. After 34 years of dedicated service, he retired at the age of 57.

Throughout his life, Melvin enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and interests. He loved riding motorcycles, rebuilding anything with an engine, designing and making iPad holders for Barbara to sell at craft shows. He was a loyal Houston Astros fan, enjoyed searching eBay and Amazon for great deals, and watching classic westerns. If something was broken, Melvin was the one people called—he had a remarkable and natural talent for fixing, tinkering, and solving problems with patience and skill.

Above all, Melvin's greatest joy was his family and friends. Nearly every year, he attended the Scruggs family reunion on Scruggs Lane in Corsicana, followed by the Sunday devotional at Grape Creek Cemetery in Navarro County, Texas. These cherished traditions reflected his deep love for his family heritage and his belief in staying connected to those who came before him.

His warm smile could light up any room, and he never met a stranger. To know Melvin was to feel welcomed, valued, and loved.

Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, James Alva Scruggs (1959), Leatha Ernestine Thompson Scruggs Collins (1997), his brothers; James Ernest Scruggs (2002) and Tommy Dale Scruggs (2019).

Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his son, Melvin (Linda) Scruggs Jr.; his daughter, Cheryl (Lance) Robbins; four grandchildren, Ashley (Paul), Cody (Michelle), Zachry (Monica), and Dylan; and six great-grandchildren, Cameron, Payton, Sutton, Ryan, Chloe, and Brooklyn. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart. To his grandchildren and great‑grandchildren, he was affectionately known as "Paw Paw." - a name that carries countless treasured memories.

Melvin will be laid to rest at Grape Creek Cemetery in Navarro County, Corsicana, TX on Saturday April 18th at 11:30am

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
