María Bonin Obituary

María "Sylvia" Bonin was a source of joy and comfort to all those who knew her in Corsicana, where she and her husband Charles (1932-2012) were active members in the community for thirty-one years. Born on November 29, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas to Alfredo Ascención Rodriguez and María Lucía Otila (Tillie) Treviño Rodriguez, she passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025, in College Station, Texas, where she was cared for by family.

Sylvia's journey through life was one characterized by faith and family, as well as a passionate dedication to the arts, her church, and her community. She was a loving mother to her sons Michael (Diana), Stephen, Dr. Thomas (Rebecca), and Dr. Paul Bonin, as well as a proud grandmother to seven and great-grandmother to two. She also shared a close bond with her brother, Dr. Carlos Rodriguez, as well as her mother Tillie, who lived with her and Charles in Corsicana for nine years.

As the head of the Navarro Council of the Arts from 1982 to 2000, she built a thriving arts residency program, bringing artists and events to Corsicana schools, community and cultural centers. Her leadership transformed the council into a vibrant organization, receiving accolades from and the Texas Council on the Arts and attention in Smithsonian Air and Space Magazine.

Upon retiring from the arts council, Sylvia and Charles dedicated their time to church and the community. Having earned a Masters in Pastoral Ministry from the University of Dallas in 1991 alongside Charles, Sylvia worked as a hospice chaplain. The couple also volunteered with Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance and Meals on Wheels, bringing delicious food and friendship to many. At Immaculate Conception Church, she was active in the Women's Altar Society, Legion of Mary, and Christmas in October, alongside Charles. She also taught religious education, visited and brought communion to residents in assisted living/nursing homes throughout the area.

Those who knew Sylvia would describe her as faith-filled, charismatic, and kind. Her faith guided her, her warmth drew people to her, and her passion for life was infectious. She inspired others to live with purpose, to embrace each day with enthusiasm, and to love without reservation.
