Mack  Verhyden
Mack Verhyden, 94, of Southern Pines, passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2019 at St. Joseph of the Pines.
Born July 4th,1924, he was the son of the late Cecil and Hala (McCamey) Verhyden. Mack attended school in Richland and Corsicana and went on to study Mechanical Engineering at Texas Tech. He was drafted into the United States Army during WWII. He was assigned to the Army Corp of Engineers OCS training at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, but never saw active duty as the war finished before he completed training. Mack returned to Texas Tech and completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 1947.
Shortly after graduation, Mack started working at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, Illinois. His first position was with the Export Department. He was eventually assigned to sales and worked in Africa in the early 50s' before being transferred to Brazil where he met his wife, Ruth Cook, in Rio de janeiro. They were married in 1956 and subsequently had three children: Mark, Ann and John.
In the following years they lived in Peoria, Illinois; Monterrey, Mexico and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Shortly after retiring from Caterpillar as a Vice-President in the late 80s' they moved to Pinehurst, North Carolina.
At Pinehurst Mack was active in many community organizations such as the United Way, Kiwanis, Boys and Girls Club and Bethany House.
Mack was preceded in death by his wife Ruth and their son John.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Keith Sutton; grandson Jason Sutton of Mountain View, Arkansas; son Mark Verhyden of Worcester, Massachusetts; granddaughter Elizabeth (Verhyden) Henderson and her husband, Bradley Henderson of Alexandria, Virginia.
A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
