Herndon Darrell 'H.D.' Nance Obituary

The Rev. Herndon Darrell "H.D." Nance was born Aug. 28, 1927, and passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, in Fairfield at the age of 82. He was born in Leachville, Ark., to Martha Ellen Smith and John Luther Nance. He was the youngest male of nine children. At an early age, Darrell worked alongside his siblings on the family farm. Later in his life he was drafted into the United States Army. During his military career he served at Okinawa, Japan, where he was severely wounded; as a result, he was honorably discharged from the military. He was later employed by Cotton Belt Railway; however, he knew that his purpose in life was to preach the gospel and he pursued that calling by attending Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie. He graduated and became an ordained minister with the Assembly of God Church. He began his ministry in his home state of Arkansas, and pastored several churches there as well as in the state of Tennessee. After the death of his first wife, he relocated Corsicana. While working with Corley Funeral Home, he met his future wife Hazel. The two were married on July 26, 1974. Soon after, Darrell joined the Pentecostal Church of God and had been an ordained minister for the last 35 years. The couple pastored several churches in Arlington, Corsicana and Waxahachie.. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepson, Rickie Ivie; and stepdaughter-in-law, Jan Ivie.. H.D., as he liked to be called, is survived by his wife of 36 years, Hazel Nance of Corsicana; daughter, Angela Arthur and husband Richard; stepchildren, Carol Ivie Wallace and husband Don, and Pete Ivie; daughter-in-law, Virginia Ivie; several grandchildren, Tara Ledbetter of Gaithersburg, Md., Shane Wallace of Denton, Richille Chiles of Corsicana, Rheann Ivie Gaston of Corsicana, Jennifer Limerick of Rockwall, Chad Ivie of Rockwall, Hannah Short of Corsicana and Luke Arthur of Corsicana; and many great-grandchildren, Lillie Wallace, Orion Gaston, Jacob and Parker Limerick, and Rikki and Riley Chiles. He leaves behind his younger twin sisters, Zelma Ashabrenner and Velma Dulaney of Arkansas; and a brother, Murrell Nance and wife Ruby of Memphis, Tenn. Darrell leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 26, at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Gary W. Johnson officiating, along with the Rev. James Williams and the Rev. Don Clark..
