George (Skeeter) Ross Edwards joined his Savior and his loved ones in heaven on April 26, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kieffer & Pauline Edwards; brothers, Walter and James; son Andy Edwards; and numerous other beloved family members.
George is survived by his wife, Dixie; sister Patsy Hewett; children Terry Edwards and Denise; Amy Elrod and Tommy; Grandchildren Monica Arabie and David; Caleb Moore and Laura; Andy Kludy and Katie; Hayden Elrod and Ashley; Toby Edwards; and great-grandchildren Nicollette, Evangeline, Genevieve, John Paul, James, Vivienne, and Alexandria Arabie; Jack and Leighton Moore; Mia and Hunter Kludy; Callen and Aria Elrod; and a multitude of beloved nieces and nephews.
George was born in Marfa and lived in West Texas until the family moved to Johnson City when he was 8 years old. George graduated high school in Johnson City and graduated college from Southwest Texas (now Texas State) in 1962. George continued his education and earned a master's degree from Sam Houston in 1968 and a mid-management certification for principals from UT Tyler in 1983. He met his wife Dixie at college; they married in 1962 and had three children. He joined the National Guard upon entering college, served all through college and was honorably discharged in 1967. He spent his professional life as an educator in Texas for 33 years, first as a Coach and later as a Principal. After retiring, George continued his lifetime of service through his church and charitable activities. He was a deacon for 51 years. He drove the bus for the FBC Kerens bus ministry. He was the Kerens coordinator for Meals on Wheels from 1998 to 2019. He assisted with Vacation Bible School almost every year since 1969. And in 2019, the Kerens Chamber of Commerce awarded him (and Dixie) with Kerens Citizens of the Year.
As a lifelong coach, George loved sports. Every year while he was coaching, he would pull his children out of school and take them to Austin for the Texas Basketball State Championship tournament. Even after he moved into administration, he continued to attend high school sporting events and support the Bobcats, even acting as the football announcer for many years. He also loved going to his grandchildren's sporting events, from pee wee sports all the way to the Texas Boys Baseball State Championship tournament and the College World Series. For several years, he would take his grandsons to opening day for the Texas Rangers. After all his grandchildren "retired" from organized sports, he then got to start over and go to his great grandchildren's sporting events.
George also loved to play games with his family and friends. Domino games, card games, party games, whatever, if the question "Who wants to play...?" was asked, his answer was always "ME".
Every summer, grandkids would get to spend a week's vacation at Granddad's home. Grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews were all welcome for the week of Vacation Bible School. At all family events, George loved to get out the pencil and ruler and measure all the children's heights. There is a special door in the family room where heights have been recorded since 1996.
George touched the lives of countless people over the years. He was always available whenever needed; for family, friends, students, or anyone in need. In any circumstance, he was ready with appropriate action, be it an encouraging word, a prayer, or a helping hand.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, April 29th at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church Kerens, TX, 200 SW 2nd St. Kerens, TX 75144.
