Lum was born Aug. 7, 1934 in Waco to Dewey and Jennie (Miller) Renfro. He lived most of his life in Dawson and was a 1952 graduate of Dawson High School where he was a multi-sport athlete. Lum especially excelled on the football field earning numerous honors including being named Super Centex by the Waco Tribune Herald. For many years, Lum held the school record for career yards rushing on the gridiron for the Bulldogs.
Lum worked for Texas Telephone and Telegraph and later served as the Tax Assessor/Collector for Dawson ISD as well as being the groundskeeper for the school district and took great pride in the grooming of the football field in particular. He was active in community affairs as he served as the Mayor of Dawson and was also the editor for Simmental Magazine. Lum loved animals and raised Greyhounds which he raced at various tracks around the state.
He was an avid supporter of Dawson ISD and his love of cooking lead him to providing the meals for many sports and ag banquets for Dawson students over the years. Lum was well known for his pecan pralines, peanut patties and salty pickles as well as his BBQ. He was also a proud veteran having served his country in the Army and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dawson
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann (King) Renfro of Dawson; daughter, Robin Harkins of Dawson; two sons, Colin "Bud" Renfro and wife, Kim of Dawson and Darren Renfro and wife, Jana of Waxahachie; four grandchildren, Jordan Renfro of Dallas, Nicholas Renfro of Mount Vernon, Parker Renfro of Waxahachie and Peyton Renfro of Waxahachie; brother, Bill Renfro and wife, Babe of Coppell; mother-in-law, Ima King of Corsicana; sister-in-law, Brenda King of Tyler; several nephews and other extended family members; a host of wonderful friends and his beloved dog, Charlie Rufus.
The family would like to express its appreciation to Dr. Ronald Wilson and Texas Home Health for their support and compassionate care.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018 at Wade Funeral Chapel in Hubbard with Rev. Jake Wade and Rev. Joy Fattori officiating. Interment to follow in Dawson Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bill Gray, Chad King, Tommy Jenkins, Stacey Slater, Nicholas Renfro and Jackie Thomas.
Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Bell, Billy Roy Mitcham, Gary Phillips, Jerry Blissett and the Dawson Coffee Club.
