Jacksonville - Barbara Ann McVay, 87, of Tupelo, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026 at The Mitchell Center of Traceway Retirement Community in Tupelo, MS. Born November 5, 1938, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to W.E. and Katherine Plunkett, she graduated from Tupelo High School and attended Mississippi University for Women. Barbara lived in Mississippi, Indiana, and Texas, where she was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Corsicana, TX and later Chatfield Methodist Church. She was involved in her community through Navarro County Crime Stoppers, the Chatfield Community Watch program, and as a longtime voting official. A talented artist, she enjoyed painting western landscapes and raising and training horses. Known as "Butch" to many Texas friends, she returned to Tupelo in 2022. She is survived by her sons, John (Jock) Mitchell, Jr. (Judy) of Baltimore, MD, and James (Bubba) Hussey, Jr. (Robin) of Phoenix, AZ; her daughter, Renee Mitchell Chisolm of Braxton, MS; her sister, Sandra Pruett (Bobby) of Tupelo, MS; her brother, Barry Plunkett (Barbara) of Jackson, MS; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, John Aubrey Mitchell, James (Jim) Hussey, and Larry McVay; and her son, Michael Brooks Mitchell. She will be remembered as a devoted mother, sister, and friend. The family extends appreciation to The Mitchell Center, Gentiva Hospice, and caregiver Hazel Barnes.
