Melinda's Story

Text size

Melinda Matthews Coffman, 57, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017 at M.D. Anderson in Houston surrounded by family and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend who loved at all times, even while enduring a long battle with cancer.
Melinda was born on Oct. 10, 1959 in Longview to father Jerry Matthews and mother Gloria Matthews. She graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a Bachelor's of Arts in Education in 1983. Upon graduation, she taught third grade in Commerce. In 1984, she became a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines.
Melinda met her husband, John Coffman, while traveling to Midland for Southwest. She relocated to Midland and married John on April 25, 1987. They made Midland their home where they raised their four children, Mason, Chaney, Madeline, and Kennedy. Melinda's
unconditional love for her family was evident throughout her life as she lived to serve them and be an example for her sons and daughters.
Melinda was a hardworking and enthusiastic woman. She loved her job and served others faithfully. She recently celebrated her 33rd anniversary with Southwest Airlines as a flight attendant. She had such a fun-loving personality and servant's heart that shone daily in her work and travels. She could brighten anyone's day and make anyone laugh with her incredible sense of humor.
When diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, she remained dedicated to her family, work, and in her will to fight her illness. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015, and most recently, leukemia in March of 2017. Even faced with so many setbacks, Melinda continued to be strong and never gave up hope. She remained a brave, iron-willed woman, even throughout her final days.
Melinda was known for her genuine, free spirited personality and her willingness to serve others. Melinda's courage throughout her life and especially during her battle with cancer has been a testimony to her unwavering faith in the Lord. By God's grace, we see Melinda's strong character traits personified in all four of her children. Melinda will be missed by all, but will live on through the lives of those who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her father Jerry Matthews.
Melinda is survived by her husband of 30 years, John Coffman; son, Mason Coffman; son and daughter-in-law, Chaney and Katie Coffman; daughters, Madeline and Kennedy Coffman; mother, Gloria Matthews; sister, Mitzi Cramer and her husband, Robert; brother, Michael Matthews and his wife, Andrea; brother-in-law, Jim Coffman, and his wife, Terri; sister-in-law, Janna Donovan and her husband, David and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration was held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 7, 2017 at Stonegate Fellowship in Midland with Pastor Kyle Rodgers officiating. Following the service, a reception was held in the foyer to greet family.
