Irene's Story

Text size

Irene Vera Ross went to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at the age of 86. She was a descendent of the Nagy and Horvath families who immigrated through Ellis Island in the early 1900's. Irene grew up with her large family on their farms in Navarro County. Her Hungarian ancestors are featured on the cover of "The Hungarian Texans" written by James Patrick McGuire with the UT Institute of Texan Cultures.
Irene graduated with honors from Corsicana High School and shortly thereafter married World War II veteran and rancher, Carl (Ed) Perkins from Corbet. They operated a successful cattle ranch near Marshall for many years, where they raised their three children, Sally, Patsy, and Michael.
She later remarried and moved to Longview where she was an active member of Longview Church of Christ. She was an avid reader and loved to garden, cook, sew, fish, babysit her grandchildren and take care of the farm.
She was preceded in death by her beloved second husband, Melvin Ross. After his death, Irene returned to Corsicana to be near her brothers and sister. In Corsicana, she enjoyed participating in the Senior Activity Center, the Corsicana YMCA, the Red Hat Society, and Westhill Church of Christ.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Patsy Arden; her son, Michael Perkins and his wife Billie; grandchildren Robby Arden and his wife Jessica and Lela Smith and husband Mickey; great grandchildren, Wyatt Arden, Jesse Arden, Rhianna Swain, and Allison Smith; brothers Johnny Horvath and wife Charlene, Ernest Horvath and wife Mary, and Sam Horvath and wife Peggy along with many nephews, nieces, and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter Sally Skinner, her brother Emery Horvath, and her sisters Sarah Morris, Catherine Horvath, and Ida Horvath.
The family appreciates the kindness and thoughtfulness of the staff and doctors at Hand-in-Hand Hospice, Heritage Oaks Retirement Village, Navarro Regional Hospital, and the Corsicana Fire Department/EMS, as well as the prayers and visits from Pastors Gary Johnson and Tim Cooke.
Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Leroy Radar Funeral Home located at 1617 Judson Road in Longview. Interment will follow at Rosewood Park. The family will receive friends from noon to 3 p.m. prior to the service.
