Gayle Dalton Garner was born on Feb. 24, 1928 in Chatfield as the youngest child of William L. and Bertha Garner. He went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016. Gayle grew up in Chatfield with one brother and three sisters and went to school in Chatfield and Rice.
His father was a farmer, but Gayle's love was working on old cars. He took this hobby and followed this line of work after his marriage to Christine Gotcher; working for many years for Ferma C. Stewart Motor Company of Corsicana. Later he worked as a mechanic for Forrester Chevrolet. After a brief career as shop manager in Waco for Steakley Chevrolet, Gayle returned with his family to Corsicana, where he opened his own auto repair business/Fina gas station on the corner of 15th street and 2nd avenue. Many local people will remember taking their cars to him for his expertise and honesty and outstanding workmanship. Later he moved his business to Garner's Auto Service on 2nd Avenue and 18th Street where he worked until his retirement in 1993.
Gayle was a Christian first in all his endeavors and was a faithful member at Westhill Church of Christ. His strength of character and sense of humor carried him through many health issues starting at the age of 51 and continuing throughout the remainder of his life. Yet he was never without a joke or a good story to tell. His amazing love for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren has been a lesson for all who knew him. He was known far and wide for his wonderful bear hugs. We will always be grateful that God chose to put him in our lives.
Gayle is survived by his wife of 69 years, Christine Gotcher Garner, as well as one son, Ron Garner and wife, Diane; two daughters, Melanie Bland and husband, Bobby, and Gail Smith and husband, James. He has eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2016 at Corley Funeral Home.
Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Sam Dilbeck officiating. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana.
