Valta Walker Berry, 87, of Purdon passed away Oct. 19, 2017. She was born on July 15, 1930 in Navarro County to Roy and Emma Walker.
She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and woman of God. She grew up in Union High and attended Shady Grove Baptist Church where her father led the singing and her mother played piano. She married her high school sweetheart the day after her high school graduation. Chilton was enlisted in the U.S. Navy and Valta traveled with him when she could, and independently raised her sons when she couldn't travel with him. They shared many fond memories during this time including living in Saipan with the boys. She taught Sunday School wherever they lived throughout the years, including California, Siapan and Texas. After her husband retired from the Navy, she began working at Toms Food while he attended college. She loved her job and all of her coworkers. After Chilton retired from teaching at Mexia High School, they began traveling extensively taking their granddaughter with them. She was a sweet soul and will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chilton H. Berry, Jr.; parents, Roy and Emma Walker; son, Clark R. Berry and sister Dorothy Walker Gunn Parker.
She is survived by the "very best brother ever," Ernest Dale Walker and her sister-in-law, Jo Walker; sister, Veda Brown; son, Alan Berry and wife Denice; granddaughters, "her doll" Kimberly Berry Gafford and Tracy Laird; grandsons, Joshua Berry and Shayne Aytes; great-grandchildren, Tristani Gafford, McKayla Gafford, Christian Berry, Jacob Berry, Noah Berry, Brad, Amanda, Aaron and Brittney Williams; as well as her great-niece granddaughter, Emmalee Letcher.
