Ottis Ray Spurlock, 81 of Kerens, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 at Ennis Regional Medical Center in Ennis. He was born in Kerens Oct. 12, 1935 to Ottis Franklin Spurlock and Lulu Brown Lawler Spurlock.
Ottis Ray married Anna Gene Hall Nov. 28, 1957 and made their home in Kerens. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service after serving more than 44 years. Ottis Ray owned and operated Spurlock Grocery Store and service station for many years. He processed cattle and deer and worked for Lone Star Gas Company. He drove a mail truck and was co-owner of Spurlock or Berry Pluming Company. He also assisted at Paschal Funeral Home for many years.
Ottis Ray was a faithful member of the Kerens First United Methodist Church. He served as chairman of the board and building committee and was an integral part in building the current Methodist Church. He was a member of the Kerens Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. He served as mayor of Kerens for 16 years and was a member of the Kerens Chamber of Commerce. In 1974 he received the Man of the Year Award. He was very involved with establishing the Kerens Ex Students Association.
Ottis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Anna; sisters, Mary Earl and Dixie Hill; brothers-in-law, William Harold Hill and Kenneth A. "T-Bone" Stovall and one niece, Lisa Earl.
He is survived by his daughter Sandra Ball and husband Mike of Ennis; grandson, Wade Ball and wife Shelby of Denton; grandson, Wesley Ball and fiancé Carly Wells of Arlington; granddaughter, Lauren Paige Ball of Ennis; sister, Ruby Stovall of Kerens and brother-in-law Robert J. Earl of Ennis; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by longtime companion Nancy Berry of Kerens.
Ottis Ray will be remembered for loving and caring for others with a servant's heart. He was an excellent business man who loved his family and friends more than anything on this earth.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 at Paschal Funeral Home. Funeral services are set to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at the Kerens First United Methodist Church with Rev. Glenn Jones, Bro. Michael Howard and Rev. Michael Redmond officiating. Interment will follow in the Kerens Cemetery. Pallbearers are Pete Monreal, John Faulk, Daniel Berry, John Paschal, Brett Latta, Wade Ball, Wesley Ball and Dr. John Keitt Beck. Honorary pallbearers are Ray Scott, Kenneth Ingram, Don Paschal, Homer Gene Wasson, Jimmy Tyner, Richard Baxter and Tenny Whorton.
