Otis's Story

Otis Dean Jones, 93, of Tyler passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016. He was born July 15, 1923 in Angus to Azarah and Leola Nichols Jones.
Dean was a graduate of Mildred High School, Navarro Junior College and North Texas State University. He enlisted in the Texas National Guard at age 17, while still in high school. Due to an unexpected deployment on Nov. 25, 1940, he left school and became a full-time soldier in the Army. From 1940 to 1945, Dean saw action in seven countries and seven campaigns, including North Africa, the beaches of Salerno, Italy, the capture of Mount Artemisio, the beaches of St. Raphael and fighting in the Alsace Lorraine region of Northern France.
Dean was the director of Roadway Express, trucking firm in Tyler for 20 years. After retirement, he received his brokerage license and worked for J.O. Daugherty Real Estate. In the early 1980's, he returned to teaching, one of his great loves. He taught economics and history at John Tyler and Robert E. Lee High School. Dean married Gloria Mae Holloway on July 7, 1951. They raised three sons during their 47 years of marriage.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gloria, infant son Carroll Dean Jones and brothers, Freddy and Buck Jones.
He is survived by his loving family including; Charlean Montgomery, his companion of twenty years, sons; Richard Jones, Micheal Jones, and David Jones, all of Tyler; sister, Lurleen Deaton of Fort Worth, daughter-in-laws, Cathy Humphries of Noonday and Karen Alexander of Chandler, grandchildren; Richard Jones, Jr., of Tyler, Alexandria and Christopher Watkins of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Justin Jones of Tyler; great granddaughter, Presley Watkins of Little Rock, Arkansas; niece Toni Vaughn of Corsicana, and nephew Fred Deaton of Fort Worth.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, 2016 at Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana.
Graveside services with full military honors will follow at 2:30 p.m., at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery in Retreat, with Reverend Kathy S. Collier officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dean's sons and grandsons.
