Margaret's Story

Text size

Margaret "Peggy" Francis Howell, 75, was born on May 16, 1941. She passed away quietly on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017 after dealing with Alzheimer/Dementia issues for the past few years.
Peggy's focus in life was taking care of her family. She loved her husband Larry and always made sure that if she could make his life easier, she would. Peggy and Larry were a team and she was fortunate that Larry was able to take her on his work travels. They had many great memories of visiting Germany, Switzerland, Iceland, Greenland and many other locations across the pond.
She loved to take care of people and that even held true in her later Alzheimer years. One of the last times she had guests over, she wanted to make sure they were comfortable and asked them about every five minutes if they needed anything - a blanket, a water, a different blanket - who knew what she would offer next. We knew it was her disease talking but it had to make you chuckle a bit. But it's hard to fault someone trying to be kind.
At the home where she resided, she would "help out" with trying to feed the other residents, even if they didn't want it. At one point, she followed her roommate Ana around with a banana trying to get her to eat it. That didn't seem to work too well however she always kept trying.
She was devoted to her kids and grandkids. She loved that Pete had a little girl named Sabrina and they spent many, many days and nights at the lake making memories. To this day, Sabrina loved and spent time visiting her grandma. Peggy's kind heart was evident when her daughter Patti moved in with two young boys and thus they ended up co-parenting two more "kids," Evan and Gareth. Being around all these great kids, sure seemed to keep Peggy and Larry young.
One thing that will always be remembered was Peggy's loving smile and quick wit. She could laugh and joke and poke fun with the best of them and had a kind but funny response to many things. The twinkle in her eye was always there and you knew when a zinger was coming your way by the merriment in her eyes. That sharpness of wit tempered with kindness is a fond memory. We have all been touched by her kindness, will remember her humor and all will be better from knowing her.
Her last days were spent at what we called "Vilma's house," which was actually a Legends Hospice/Assisted Living home. She had wonderful caregivers in Vilma and Abby and others in the home. We are indebted to them for their care and kindness to her.
Peggy was predeceased in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Larry in October 2015 and her daughter Patti Howell, in February 2016 and by her parents Lorraine and Herbert Eilermann.
Peggy is survived by her son Pete Howell and wife Brenda; grandchildren Sabrina Howell, Evan Pritchard and Gareth Pritchard; great-grandson, Gavin Pritchard; sisters, Pat McKay and husband Dave of Belleville, Illinois Joan Guinn and husband Gary of Belleville, Illinois and Deb Schomake and husband Bob of Imperial, Missouri.
Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2017 at Paschal Funeral Home with funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Rev Glenda Whitehead will officiate and Interment will follow in the Prairie Point Cemetery.
