LaVera's Story

LaVera Hampel was born June 17, 1930, to Henry and Martha Schulte in the community of Waldo near Crawford. She passed away July 19, 2017, in Corsicana. She married Raymond Hampel, Jr. Aug. 19, 1948, in McGregor.
LaVera, Raymond and daughter, Linda, moved to Corsicana in 1960 when Raymond became the manager of Navarro County Electric Co-Op Inc., and their son, Scott, was born five years later. She worked in banking in Corsicana for approximately 40 years. She was a friend and loan officer to many in Navarro County. After retirement, she continued to work for many service organizations including Kiwanis Club and Food for Fitness and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She loved being a member of the Navarro Regional Hospital Auxiliary and working in the gift shop at the hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, and parents, Henry and Martha Schulte. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Smith and husband Bill; her son, Scott Hampel and wife Rhetta; grandchildren Gwen McCluney and husband Mike, Bryan Smith and wife Andrea, Jacob Wasinger and wife Heather, and Dalton Wasinger; great grandchildren, Elise and Grant Gray, Lauren, Walker and Ava Smith, and Dalton McCluney all of Corsicana. She is also survived by her sisters Helene Westerfeld and husband Ray, Margaret Gohlke and husband Ira, of Crawford and brother Henry Schulte and wife Frances of Boerne. She is also survived by many extended family members, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Brookdale Senior Living Center, Kindred at Home Health and Kindred Hospice for the loving and wonderful care they gave her.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2017 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Bluitt officiating.
Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim Westerfeld, Dale Westerfeld, Terry Westerfeld, Greg Westerfeld, James Gohike, Gary Gohlke.
