Joan's Story

Text size

Joan Daniel Hand, age 90, passed away Wednesday morning, Jan. 24, 2018 in Corsicana. In her last days she resided in the loving, caring community of Twilight Nursing Home of Corsicana. Granny Jo, as she was known to her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many close friends, was dearly loved and admired.
Joan was born in Blooming Grove, to Will Roy Daniel and Ethel Ryan
Daniel on Nov. 11, 1927; however, she grew up in near Navarro, Texas and graduated from Mildred High School. She was the middle child in a family of five daughters.
After graduating from high school, Joan married David N. Hand. They were married until David's death in 1975. Together they had two children who still reside in Corsicana. David Hand and Thomas Hand were co-owners of Hand's Furniture which was located on the corner of sixth and Main Street. After the deaths of the brothers, Joan and sister-in-law, Faye Hand kept the business running seamlessly for many more years. It was unusual for such a large business to be successfully owned and managed by females at the time, so co-owners Joan and Faye became pioneers in Corsicana business in that regard. Joan was a remarkable 85 when she
retired from the business.
Joan is survived by her sister Pat Daniel Howell and husband Vic, son, Bennie Hand and wife Elaine, daughter Pam Rhodes and husband Garry, grandchildren, David Hand and wife Becca of Dallas, Lauren Hand Null and husband Jason of Gallup, New Mexico, Johanna Rhodes Tanner and husband Whitt of Corsicana. Granny Jo was also greatly loved by her great-grandchildren, Holland Null, Olivia Null, Amelia Null, Caroline Hand, Claire Hand, and Joliegh Ann Tanner along with numerous nieces and nephews including Vicky Howell Payne, Danny Burneston, Norman Anderson, Robin Wylie, and Scott Wylie.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018 at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2018 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the building fund of First Baptist Church, Corsicana or the House of Refuge in Corsicana.
