Elmer's Story

Elmer Shannon "Papa" Trent, 88, of Corsicana, went home to be with the Lord Friday, Sept. 8, 2017. He was born Dec. 4, 1928, to Joe Tweed Trent and Annie Viola Quinn Trent.
Elmer lived his life for the Lord and loved his family dearly. In his family's opinion, this world would be a better place if everyone was as selfless and loving as he was. Saved and baptized at an early age, he was a true living testament of God's word. Through his walk with Christ, he helped found Harmony Missionary Baptist Church, became an ordained minister with the BMA, and served as a dedicated song director.
He attended Kerens, Harmony, and Community Missionary Baptist Churches. After 30 plus years, he retired from the Navarro County Electric Coop. For over 65 years he was a proud Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Texas A.F. and A.M. Elmer served his country and retired from the US Army National Guard. He loved to sing praises to the Lord and spend time with family and friends. He never met a stranger and was loved by those that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Joe Jr., son-in-law- Randall Cottongame and granddaughter Chasity Griggs.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Hazel Faye Adams Trent; children Joe "Jody" (Susie) Trent, Sharron "Sherry" (Tommy) Griggs, and Jerry (Gracie) Trent; grandchildren Jeri Stovall, Necole (Emily) Griggs, Shannon (Erin) Trent, Aline (Brian) Paul, Arron (Misty) Cottongame, Leslie (Brian) Chamberland, Lisa (Chris) Coston, Emily Griggs (boyfriend Preston), JR Trent (fiancé Nichole), Tommy "TL/T-Bird" (Shannon) Griggs II, and Doug (Amanda) Self; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; siblings Clayton "Bo" (Bert) Trent, C.A. "Peddler" (Nancy) Trent, June Abbie, Douglas (Diane) Trent, and sister-in-law Betty Trent and a host of family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
Interment to follow at Hamilton-Beamon Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons with his great-grandsons as honorary pallbearers.
