Carrie's Story

Text size

Carrie Marie Speights Gibson of Rice went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Jan. 24, 2017 due to complications of diabetes.
She was born on March 7, 1952 in Denver City to Callan M.B. Speights, Sr., and Jennie Elizabeth Wickson Speights. Carrie was raised in Denver City, along with her 10 brothers and sisters and was a proud graduate of Denver City High School, class of 1971.
She had her first date with Micheal Dan Gibson on Dec. 18, 1970 and they were married at the Denver City Church of Christ on Jan. 29, 1971. She was very proud to be his wife and loved him with all her heart. She and Dan were blessed with two daughters, Angela Shae Gibson Dunnahoe and Andrea Danielle Gibson. During their 45 year marriage, Dan's line of work sent them to live in various places in Texas and New Mexico, until they finally settled in Corsicana in June of 1991. While living in Corsicana, Carrie worked at P&S Pharmacy and Central Texas Business Machines, but she felt her most important role in life was being a wife and mother.
In November of 2010, Carrie and Dan moved to Rice where they planned to spend their retirement years together.
In January 1997, Carrie found her "true calling" as she became grandmother to Tyler Dan Gibson. In July of 2005, the picture was completed with the birth of Avery Madison Dunnahoe. Nana loved her grandchildren more than she could ever convey and was infinitely proud of each of them and their accomplishments. She loved going to Ty's theater productions and Avery's award assemblies at school and you could count on her taking a million pictures while there. While Carrie was devoted to her family and friends, without question, she loved her Lord and Savior even more. She was baptized on April 10, 1963 at the Denver City Church of Christ and was currently a member of Westhill Church of Christ in Corsicana. She was a true example of Christian light and encouraged everyone to "do something each day to bring honor and glory to God."
She was preceded in death by her parents Callan and Jennie Speights, and her father and mother-in-law Roy A. "Hoot" and Mary Martin Gibson, all of Denver City; sisters Patricia Ann Speights and Rita Speights Compton; sister-in-law Charlotte Gibson Gunter, and brothers-in-law Gene Sims; Dick Duncan and Don Compton.
She is survived by her loving husband Dan Gibson of Rice, her daughters Angela Gibson Dunnahoe of Corsicana and Danielle Gibson of Rice; two grandchildren, Ty Gibson and Avery Dunnahoe; brothers Curtis Speights, Callan Speights, Doug Speights and wife Linda, Sammy Speights and wife Glenda; sisters Barbara Duncan, Phyllis Blackwood, Sharlot Martin and Debbie Sims; brothers-in-law Russell Gunter, Rick Gibson and wife Christie, Mark Gibson and wife Kim and Kris Gibson and wife Sharon. She also had many nieces and nephews whom she adored and loved unconditionally.
Vistation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home, 1530 N. 45th St., in Corsicana.
A celebration of Carrie's life is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017 at Westhill Church of Christ. Interment will follow the services at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Westhill Church of Christ Benevolence Program (3400 West Highway 22, Corsicana, Texas 75110).
